Yay Me!

Well folks, today is officially the first day of August. It’s unofficially the first day of August as well. That means that the glorious experiment that was Feld-Month, AKA Corey Feldman Month, AKA “Why do I do these things to myself?” has officially come to a close, as has Juggalo July and Ju-Live.

That’s a whole lot of silly, silly ideas for a single month but at the risk of being immodest, I think I did a fantastic fucking job on Corey Feldman Month. If the purpose of Corey Feldman Month was solely to make fun of Feldman, it would have been an empty and pointless endeavor and while I did, indeed, have some fun at Feldman’s expense, I was much more interested in trying to understand and appreciate Feldman, and the curious, zig-zagging path he’s pursued, personally and professionally, than in mocking a man who is as much a walking punchline as he is an actor and musician these days.

Like Corey Feldman in concert, I wanted to take y’all on an emotional journey through the decades, and to chart Feldman’s evolution from adorable child star to drugged-up adolescent miscreant to oddball kitsch icon pursuing a musical career in violent defiance of God’s wishes and the entire recording industry, past, present and future.

Corey Feldman Month is a good illustration of what this site can do, as is Juggalo July and Ju-Live, so I would love to keep the momentum going strong with further theme months. This is where I turn to you, the people who make this site possible, by reading and donating and believing in me, for suggestions.

What would you like to see me devote a month to, the way I devoted July to Corey Feldman? It can literally be anything, good, bad or in-between. It just has to be juicy and exciting and relatively deep. What would you like to see me write about?

Speaking of keeping the momentum going strong, I am super happy with the Patreon, but it levels off every once in a while, so I need to keep pumping the prime, metaphorically speaking. So I am introducing the first-ever patron-only feature on Nathan Rabin’s Happy Place. I love doing Control Nathan Rabin and it is the column most directly linked to patron and Patreon so I am announcing that I will officially be doing one Control Nathan Rabin every month that only patrons will have access to.

And since I’m curiously unwilling to stop writing about Corey Feldman, for the first patron-only I am offering a choice between Feldman’s season on Surreal Life or his episode of Wife Swap. But only patrons can vote on this, and only patrons will be able to read the entry, so if you are not a patron, please do consider becoming one at https://www.patreon.com/nathanrabinshappyplace

I’m introducing another patron-only feature as well. It’s called “The Most Self-Indulgent Column in the World.” In it, I will go back and read all of my books, beginning with The Big Rewind and ending with the book on Postal I am writing with Brock Wilbur, and then review them, both as literature and as reflections on my life and psyche. It will be incredibly self-indulgent, and probably embarrassing, but you’ll have to pledge to find out.

Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for making Feldman Month a success. If you weren’t so willing to follow me down strange avenues and alleyways, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to pursue such curious niche projects. Usually subject matter dictates traffic more than voice, but you beautiful weirdoes would apparently rather read about National Lampoon’s Last Resort than La La Land or Lego Batman here.

So thank you letting me be me, and let’s keep on keeping on and make this site something we can all be proud of.
