Leave AOC Alone or No, Progressives Don't Have To Take a Vow of Poverty

I am not one to kink-shame. We live in a harsh and often terrifying world. As long as you’re not hurting anybody, perv out to your heart’s content! But I am struck by how much of the Republican Party, particularly its extremely, excessively and obnoxiously online contingent seems to derive an intense masochistic sexual thrill from getting owned online by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Representative the Left and Right are equally obsessed with.

In a typically pathetic attempt, Charlie Kirk tweeted of AOC, “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who pretends to be a champion of the people & believes the unemployment went down because were taking two jobs, just posed in a photoshoot with a $3,500 outfit, $625 shoes all while saying the rich have too much power and that socialism hasn't been tried.”

AOC, queen of the online clap back, pointed out to Kirk and all of the other mouth-breathing dullards pathologically obsessed with her that when you do a photo shoot you BORROW expensive clothes that you are then expected to return at the end of the shoot.

Wait, so she worked hard and pursued opportunities to become successful? That is anything but the American way.

Wait, so she worked hard and pursued opportunities to become successful? That is anything but the American way.

I’m not sure that would have mattered to Kirk or any of the other frothing at the mouth haters pointing an accusatory finger in AOC’s direction over her supposed hypocrisy. To these gleeful, deluded idiots, you simply CANNOT be a stylish young woman who wears nice clothes AND someone who cares about the masses. You have to choose: are you concerned about the possibilities of millions of working people dying unnecessarily because they are deprived health care or do you want to wear a nice dress for a photo shoot or a gala event? You can’t have both and by briefly wearing six hundred and twenty five dollar shoes, AOC was clearly broadcasting that the poor can all go fuck themselves, because all she cares about is “flossing” and living the good life.

Here’s the thing: progressives do not need to take a vow of perpetual poverty. You can believe that capitalism is a cruel and inhuman system and still wear nice clothes every once in a while.

AOC is in a curiously bifurcated situation in that she simultaneously cannot stop winning when it comes to owning all of these idiots with devastating comebacks and killer wit but also CANNOT win with Conservatives, because no matter what you do, you will be found lacking, particularly if you are a very attractive women Conservatives want to fuck, and humiliate, and control, preferably all at the same time in ways they do not understand but nevertheless make them very, very angry, with big old rage-boners.

Take Jane Fonda. When she lived her progressive politics by visiting North Vietnam and later living a modest, middle-class life as the wife of activist and small-time politician Tom Hayden she became arguably the most hated celebrity never to have killed or raped anyone. Truth be told, I bet there are a whole lot of folks on the right who have a more positive impression of Bill Cosby than the woman not so affectionately known as “Hanoi Jane.”

But when Fonda married billionaire Ted Turner and lived the life of a billionaire’s wife she was pilloried as a hypocrite and a fraud and a craven materialist by the same people apoplectic that one of Hollywood’s most notorious leftists was willing to make herself one of the biggest targets in pop culture for the sake of living her ideals.

It doesn’t matter if AOC wears designer clothing or dresses like a 19th century Prussian peasant. The Charlie Kirks of the world hate her because of who she is and what she represents, not her clothes or her apartment.

Obviously, people of integrity should not be flagrant hypocrites. If AOC preached revolution and worker’s rights and then took great pride in spending 30,000 dollars a month on expensive wine to fuel her pricey alcoholism, a la Johnny Depp, then it would certainly be right to call her out on the conflict between her professed ideals and her actions. But I have no problem whatsoever with AOC not living like a homeless person when she’s one of the most famous and talked about politicians in the richest country in the world.

I don’t give a fuck if AOC sometimes wears nice clothes. I suspect her constituents don’t care either. Conservatives are the only ones who seem to care, and as tends to be the case, they care WAY too much and for no good reason, either, beyond their pathetic need to see their own greed and materialism and ugliness reflected in their distorted perception of their enemies.
