September Will be Lovable Losers/Bad with Money Month Here at the Happy Place!

Sometime late in 2019 I had one of my trademark big ideas for the following year. Inspired by bad movie podcasts that give listeners and patrons an opportunity to suggest terrible movies they should cover I decided to give my patrons an opportunity to choose an entire year’s worth of theme months here at the Happy Place for a feature called 2020: The Year YOU Control Nathan Rabin’s Happy Place

It did not work out as planned for any number of reasons. Looking back I did a very bad job of explaining the concept to readers. On a related note, I did a VERY bad job of selling the idea to readers as well.

I got a handful of nomination for theme months but nowhere near as many as I had hoped. Truth be told, I probably made somewhere in the area of six hundred to eight hundred dollars in total for a project that would require me to write something in the area of sixty meaty pieces, or five for each theme month.

The pieces that I’ve been writing for these theme months take up most of a workday. That means that for six hundred dollars or so in contributions to the Happy Place Patreon I wrote sixty or more pieces.

That adds up to about ten dollars a piece/day.  I don’t want to brag but after twenty-four years as a professional pop culture writer and any number of books I make SUBSTANTIALLY more than ten dollars a day. I make more than TWENTY dollars a day as a veteran author, website proprietor and blogger.

Yet I’ve pursued 2020: The Year YOU Control Nathan Rabin all the same because I made a promise to YOU, the Happy Place reader/patron and I believe in living up to your promises.

So September will be “Lovable Losers/Bad with Money Month”, the TENTH theme month in 2020: The Year YOU Control Nathan Rabin. That leaves only two more of these bad boys to go. I will be very relieved when this massive project is over and I can go back to writing about whatever the hell I want to write about, as long as a reader commissioned it for Control Nathan Rabin 4.0 or it stars John Travolta or Nicolas Cage.

It seems appropriate that I’m doing a month devoted to movies about lovable losers who are bad with money because this project itself is something of a lovable loser that proves yet again that I am bad with money.

So what would you like to see me write up for this month? So far I’ve written up Michael Ritchie’s 1983 survivalist satire The Survivors and plan to cover The Dream Team and the Emilio Estevez directorial effort Men at Work.

What would YOU like me to write about? Let me know in the comments and remember to always like, review and subscribe!
