Rebel Wilson and her Huffy, Defiantly Proud Media Blackmailers

On June 11th the Australian rag The Sydney Morning Herald ran an article by Andrew Hornery entitled “Rebel starts spreading the news of relationship” that begins, disingenuously, “In a perfect world, “outing” same-sex celebrity relationships should be a redundant concept in 2022. Love is love, right?”

It’s a curious and deeply hypocritical way to open an article bitterly complaining that actress and musician Rebel Wilson sadistically denied the The Sydney Morning Herald an opportunity to blackmail her into giving them an exclusive on her same sex relationship with leisure wear designer Ramona Agruma by going public with the relationship herself.

The flaming pile of human garbage who wrote the article hilariously and counter-intuitively continues, “So, it was an abundance of caution and respect that this media outlet emailed Rebel Wilson’s representatives on Thursday morning, giving her two days to comment on her new relationship with another woman, LA leisure wear designer Ramona Agruma, before publishing a single word.”

“Caution” and “Respect” are strange words to describe a sleaze merchant “giving” Wilson two whole days (that’s FORTY-EIGHT whole hours!) to talk to them publicly about having a relationship with a woman before they went public with the information themselves.

The paper seems to think they went the classy route by giving her a tiny amount of time to respond positively to their threats and that Wilson shamefully denied them their god-given right to an exclusive story about how someone they apparently despise with a white-hot burning passion had a new partner.

Hornery depicted Wilson’s choice to out herself in the darkest possible light, bitterly complaining, “Wilson opted to gazump the story, posting about her new “Disney Princess” on Instagram early Friday morning, the same platform she had previously used to brag about her handsome ex-boyfriend, wealthy American beer baron Jacob Busch.”

Wilson is a popular performer in The United States but an even bigger, even more controversial star in Australia, in part because she successfully filed a defamation lawsuit against various publications for branding her a pathological liar.

That is the subtext for Hornery raging, “Considering how bitterly Wilson had complained about poor journalism standards when she successfully sued Woman’s Day for defamation, her choice to ignore our discreet, genuine and honest queries was, in our view, underwhelming.”

I suppose that the papers’s queries were honest in the sense that they REALLY WANTED TO KNOW WHETHER WILSON WAS FUCKING A HOT WOMAN, discreet in that the paper did not tweet Wilson, “HEY, WE HEAR YOU’RE FUCKING A BROAD. DM US TO LET US KNOW IF THAT’S TRUE WITHIN 48 HOURS OR WE WILL OUT YOU AGAINST YOUR WILL” but rather emailed or called her privately with that message. Also, the paper was honest in their unrepenting sleaziness.

Underwhelming! These motherfuckers have the audacity to be underwhelmed by Wilsons’s response to their threats.

The Sydney Morning Herald was honest, I suppose, in telling the world exactly how disgustingly and deplorably they behaved towards Wilson, and just how much they think she owes them for not outing her.

They could have been less honest, and not humiliated themselves in front of the entire world, but they chose to out themselves as blackmailers.

That’s the crazy part to me. The Sydney Morning Herald published that hateful article thinking that it would reflect well on them and terribly on Wilson, that people would read it and think that the Pitch Perfect star was a piece of shit for not instantly giving into the paper’s demands.

Hornery’s actions make more sense within the context of greed and desperation. An exclusive piece in The Sydney Morning Herald where Wilson comes out, or a piece where the paper outs her as bisexual would be huge for the paper.

But Wilson cruelly denied them an opportunity to publish either piece so they petulantly ran an article accusing her of being REALLY uncool about being blackmailed.

If they couldn’t get positive attention, they decided to court negative attention with a piece destined to be hate-read and commented upon world-wide because it is so transparently awful and wrong and regressive.

It’s not unlike how sleazy 1950s rags like Confidential would blackmail gay celebrities into giving them dirt on other gay celebrities. If a new contract player didn’t want the world to know he was gay he could give up a bigger star like Rock Hudson.

It was an ugly transactional endeavor predicated on the idea that being outed as gay would destroy a career, or at least harm it.

Despite Hornery’s contention that “outing” same-sex celebrity relationships should be a redundant concept in 2022” and that “love is love”, it’s clear nevertheless that in some ways very little has changed, at least when it comes to the sleaziest bottom-feeders in the media.
