Announcing the Sweaty Summer Desperation Sale at Nathan Rabin's Bad Ideas!
About a month back, I launched my very first sale here at Nathan Rabin’s Bad Ideas. I’m always experimenting with different ways to grow my business.
It was a resounding success. I gained around 16 new paid subscribers in a week. My Substack roared to a new high in annual income and paid subscribers. I’m always bracing myself for a giant setback, so this surprised me in the best possible way.
Then, as I like to say, things took a turn. On Father’s Day, I learned that my beloved father had died at 77. He was in hospice, so it was not a surprise, but it was devastating, in part because my mom abandoned me, so my dad raised me.
Then my wife had emergency gastrointestinal surgery. It’s good that we caught it in time, but it’s never fun or cheap spending a substantial amount of time in the hospital for a fairly involved surgery.
Then my phone and computer broke.
This morning, I was making my son’s bed when a fire inexplicably began in one of the outlets in his room. Fortunately, I was in the room when the fire started. If I were not home, it would have consumed our entire townhouse. If I had not been there to see it when it started, the damage would have been much more severe.
We called 911, and the fine folks at the Alpharetta Fire Department took care of the situation. My sons checked out their impressive firetrucks, which was pretty sweet.
Last, and least, in the past month, my Substack went from steady growth to losing subscribers at a rapid rate. For the last month, I’ve been down $ 400 a month in yearly income and lost double-digit paid subscribers.
I live in perpetual fear of the bottom falling out, because it often does. So, I am launching a week-long sweaty summer desperation sale to encourage people to become paid subscribers to this site.
How big is this sale? Oh, I don’t know, how about FIFTY PERCENT OFF? Get connected over at https://nathanrabin.substack.com/dda18fdc
Wow! There are already various perks available to paid subscribers, but I plan to add even more. For example, to promote The Fractured Mirror, my upcoming book on American movies about the film industry, I’m going to run a list of the 100 worst movies about movies at Nathan Rabin’s Bad Ideas, and a list of the 100 BEST movies at Nathan Rabin’s Happy Place. Paid subscribers get the lists a week early.
Even if you buy The Fractured Mirror and read every word, you’ll get something out of the lists.
AND I plan to do Friday Afternoon Chill Spot chats for paid subscribers. We began last week. I’m excited to do it again!
I want Nathan Rabin’s Bad Ideas to be on fire—metaphorically—or at least growing steadily, so join our weird little club and help me recover from a month that was crazy and apocalyptic even by my standards.

Nathan needed expensive, life-saving dental implants, and his dental plan didn’t cover them, so he started a GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-nathans-journey-to-dental-implants. Give if you can!
